This project uses one fairly complex block, but the block is modified by leaving out pieces, or using the background colour for a portion of the pieces. In the first design the complete block is not used at all, but every shape used in the base block is used in the quilting motif.

I love the second one! In this one the complete block is used 24 times, the rest have quite a lot of coloured pieces missing.

An alternative to using teh background fabric would be to use very low contrast pieces … something I haven’t tried, but could ...
